Day 4 1/2 - 2pm ~ Tues 19th
Dorota Kedzierzawska | Poland | 1994 | 66 min | Cert PG
The director of the Berlin Children’s festival reckons that this is the best film they have ever shown. A young girl, whose mum is inattentive, abducts a toddler. They go on an adventure. It’s all shot from the kids’ point of view, in shades of yellow. A wee jewel of a film. Has it ever been shown in Scotland? If not, why not?
Day 4 1/2 - 7pm
Joel Coen’s Choice: High and Low
Akira Kurosawa | Japan | 1963 | 143 min | Cert 12
The legendary Toshiro Mifune is a businessman facing two crises: His son is kidnapped, and the shoe company he cares for needs rescuing from rapacious executives. He mortgages his home but can only raise enough money to save just one of these. Surely it will be his son? But then a revelation makes his choice far more complex… Master director Akira Kurosawa’s beautiful, widescreen crime movie is as morally engaging as The Apartment, and a gripping portrait of the agonies of one man’s soul. We love Joel’s choice of this movie.
